|We hope that you all had a blessed Easter and that you enjoyed this time of rest with your children. The second term is always a busy one as we have our winter sports. On top of that, the learners will be writing their June exams on the work covered in the first and second terms. We therefore ask our parents to keep motivating and supporting their children so that they can reach their fullest potential.
POETRY CLUB TOUR:
On Thursday, 21 March, the DHS poetry club left from school for their tour to Eshowe, Shakaland. The learners arrived at the beautiful land of the Zulus earlier than expected and had the chance to admire a breath-taking view, while enjoying a swim. The learners had the privilege of being guided by a very knowledgeable tour guide, Joe, who helped them feel at home. Throughout the tour, the learners were able to experience the life of the Zulus during Shaka's reign; they slept in huts and participated in many activities such as spear throwing, pottery making and tasting traditional Zulu beer - umqombothi. The DHS learners were very well-behaved and left their mark by teaching everyone they encountered all their songs. On Friday night, the learners had the chance to perform poetry and songs for other guests which was an exhilarating experience for our learners. The poetry learners also divided into boys and girls and performed the Zulu dance (ukugida) together for the guests and recited some original poems. The learners were delighted to experience such a positive response to their poetry. On Saturday, everyone sadly wished Joe farewell and arrived back safely in Dundee, exhausted but poetically inspired. The poetry club would like to thank their parents for the support they offered, Mrs Madondo and Miss Chitsulo for accompanying and encouraging them, Sthe for driving and everyone at Shakaland. JUNIOR RUGBY:
From the 21st to the 23rd of March, DHS u/14 and u/15 rugby teams participated in an u/15 rugby tournament hosted by Greytown High School. Both teams played excellent rugby and learned a lot during their stay in Greytown. The u/15 side played against Greytown's u/15As during the premier match on Thursday and were unlucky to lose 12-19. On the same day, the u/14 side came up against a very potent Empangeni u/15A side and were dominated during the first half, but improved their play a lot during the second half for a final loss of 29-0. On Friday, both sides faced tough opposition; the u/14s faced a determined Treverton u/15A side and were unfortunate to go down 17-25 after playing their best rugby of the year thus far. The u/15 side faced an Umvoti development side that appeared to draw its players from many different age groups. After leading by 21-10, injuries to several key players resulted in the team losing 21-24 and the brief hospitalisation of 3 of our players. Dundee High would like to applaud Greytown High School once again for hosting an excellent tournament that saw to high quality rugby played and enjoyed by all that attended. Thank you too, to the coaches and drivers who sacrificed their weekend to accompany and encourage our boys. BOYS' HOCKEY - POTCHEFSTROOM:
Our First Team squad (14 players) left for Potchefstroom on the 24th of March, where they attended a hockey coaching clinic, offered by the University of the North West. An opening ceremony was held that night and all participants were introduced to the head coach, Elun Hack, and to two national players who played for South Africa at the 2012 Olympics. The first morning of training, at the University, saw the boys rested and as fresh as daisies. But as the days progressed and the sessions got more and more intense, the boys started feeling it in their bodies. The team always gave their best and placed Dundee solidly on the map of all the other participants. They played 6 matches and the scores were as follows: GIRLS' HOCKEY:
The team played a pre-tour game against the men's hockey club and won the game 1 - 0 . We are looking forward to an exciting season.
|Afrikaans Hoër (Pta) second team||DHS won 1 - 0 |
|Vereeniging Technical High||DHS won 3 - 1 |
|St. Dominics' (Newcastle)||DHS won 4 - 0 |
|Afrikaans Hoër (Pta) U/16A||DHS won 2 - 0 |
|Ferdinand Postma||DHS won 1 - 0 |
|Merensky (Tzaneen)||2 - 2 draw|
Well done, boys. Your excellent behaviour and the great games played have made Dundee High proud. We are thankful to all the role players who made this tour possible: it has unified the team, taught them new skills, given them the opportunity to play on astro and provided a lot of fun.
Our sincere appreciation go to our sponsors:
T-shirts 4 Afrika, for our awesome match kit
Tony's Tool Hire, for the great hockey bags
Mr Ndlovu (Sokhela), for two practise T-shirts per player
Over the Easter holidays the first team attended a Hockey Clinic in Bloemfontein hosted by the UFS. Mornings were spent learning new skills, games were played in the afternoon and at night 8 vs 8 games were played on the Astro. The girls played great hockey, with the highlight being a 6 - 1 win against Uitsig High School. NETBALL TOUR:
A tournament team (of the best players from the 25 schools attending) was chosen and it was a proud DHS moment when Surina Gregory was called to play against the KOVSIES side, which consists of national players. Well done Swienkies!
Super striker, Simoné Groenewald, also impressed "off" the field and was a finalist in the Miss Clinic, proof that Hockey Fitness has many advantages.
Thank you to all who made the tour possible, as well as our sponsors, FLOTEK, RABCO and the MüLLERS.
A friendly game was played against the Northern Natal A Ladies' side on Saturday 6 April. With both teams weakened due to injury, the final score was 0 - 0 . Well done, girls, we look forward to more practise games against the ladies as they prepare for the SACD Tournament in June.
Umzinyathi: The following girls were chosen to represent Umzinyathi at the provincial tournament (26 - 28 April):
|U/18|| || ||U/16|| |
|Lianca Congdon||Rebekah Lewis||Surina Gregory||Soené Kolesky|
|Simoné Groenewald||Buhle Shabangu||Karla Müller||Zanele Ndlovu|
|Chrizelle Stander||Anél Raubenheimer||Minenhle Mdlalose||Lisa Mtshali|
|Erika Prinsloo||Vanesse Burns||Sanica Williams||Mareli Maré|
|Nokuphila Dlamini|| ||Jehan Ebrahim||Happiness Manqele|
The girls travelled to Klein Kariba, near Bela-Bela in Limpopo, on the 2nd of April to attend a clinic. The coaching was extremely good and a lot was learned, but unfortunately only one of the possible five matches were played due to the rainy weather. A game drive, hot water pools, supertubing and many more fun activities were enjoyed. We offer our thanks to our driver, Mr Vögel, and to Mr and Mrs Meintjes for accompanying the girls. BOWLS:
Fanele Ndebele, Nqaba Mngomezulu, Sibusisiwe Mbatha and Kevin Johnson joined 5 other bowlers to represent KZN Country Bowls, at the U/19 Bowls South Africa Development Tournament, in Klerksdorp on 1 April. A lot was learned about the sport of Bowls and games were played against different clubs from provinces in South Africa. Sadness was cast over the Tournament when a fellow learner passed away in a tragic accident. It was an eye opener for everyone and it encouraged them all to appreciate life and to strive to always be the best in everything you do, since you never know what the future holds for you. The four DHS learners were awarded certificates for their participation and Nqaba has an extra one to show, for stepping in and helping out in the place of the learner who passed away. Mrs Arndt and Mr Slabbert are thanked for their coaching and their guidance. IMPORTANT DATES:
